THE #1 PREFERRED SCHOOL | LAST UPDATED Jan 15 2012 11:17 |
While looking back at the events and happenings of 2011, there were many firsts,
some changes, and a few struggles. We also celebrated our 25th
Anniversary. 1. Silver celebrations We
started the Silver Year with a special Founders’ Day
Service on Tuesday (18th.), where founder member and first
chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. R. Knott, spoke to the
students and staff on the founding of the College.
It was such an informative and touching speech that we all walked out of the chapel with a stronger sense of belonging than when we walked in. I had never had such a feeling in all my nineteen years at Watershed. This was followed by an enjoyable and relaxed tree planting ceremony where we planted 25 trees, one for each year from 1987 to 2011. Mr. Knott planted the 1987 tree. Parents were represented by Board members who planted the 1988 tree. Former Watershed students also planted a tree. Students and staff then took turns until all the trees were planted. We then had Form one athletics standards until lunch time. The next exciting event on the calendar is the fundraising dinner-dance which will be at the Rainbow Towers on the 25th. of March. A committee made up of Board members and staff is working tirelessly on this event. Because of logistical problems the date had to be moved from the scheduled 18th. February. This new date is yet to be confirmed. There are two different prices for tickets, the corporate and the individual. Companies can buy a table of ten for $2000.00 and will be allowed to advertise their products at the venue. Individuals can buy a seat for $50.00. There will be an extra charge for advertising if individuals so wish. There will also be a cash bar and entertainment from one of our top artists. There will be a lucky draw and an auction, and we are appealing for donations for the prizes. We also need volunteers to be ushers and to assist staff with the sales of memorabilia. Please contact Mrs. Banda, Mr. Hove, Mr. Mtuma or me if you wish to assist. We wish to make this a memorable occasion and so your support is needed. There are limited seats so you need to start now to prepare for this. Tickets will be available from the College Administrator from the 7th. of February and will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Please look out for the other events and support.
Update - 21/02/2011 2. The Silver Jubilee Fundraising Launch Dinner/Dance The 25th of March was the day of the
fundraising Launch. The preparation period was painful and time-consuming but
the occasion itself was worth every minute and every tear. The venue was The
Rainbow Towers ( Former Sheraton Hotel ) in Harare. There were close to 350
guests from all walks of life- representatives of Commerce and Industry in
Zimbabwe, parents of past and present Watershed students, Watershed staff And
Watershed alumni. The guest speaker was Professor Hope Sadza, the founder and
Vice Chancellor of The Women’s University in Zimbabwe.
The decor, done by parents, Mrs. Chilowa and Mrs. Muchenje, and Watershed staff in the 25th. celebrations committee, was stunning. As for the occasion itself, one had to be there to get the real feel and to be part of it. Mr. Never Mhlanga, a Board member, was the Master of Ceremonies. Mr Joseph Goromonzi, chairman of the Board of Governors gave the opening remarks. The Head, Mrs. Angela Charidza, gave the guests a pictorial summary of the 25 year History of the College and then the plans for the future. She emphasised that Watershed was inviting individuals or companies to partner with in the building of the green hall which, among others, is the major project as the College ‘leaps into the future’. The guest speaker emphasised the need for private school education to be all-encompassing. To this end it is important for these schools to follow the global village trends in terms of technology. She then declared the Silver Jubilee Fundraising and celebrations open. The celebrations committee of volunteers, under the chairmanship of Mrs. Tendai Banda worked tirelessly, over and above their normal load, to prepare for the dinner. They still have more events to arrange until the end of the year. Thumbs up to them. 3. Chairman's Welcome Address - Joseph Goromonzi
Professor Hope Sadza, fellow members of the Board of
Governors, Mrs Angela Charidza - the Watershed Head and Mr Charidza, staff, our
business associates and parents, Ladies and Gentlemen. Good evening.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome
you in this landmark year for Watershed College, as we leap into the future.
Your presence is a source of inspiration and encouragement for us and I extend
a hearty welcome to you all. Your continued support and faith in Watershed
College has helped us to reach this far. Life is a journey. Some of you have
been associated with the Watershed College right from its birth and 25 years
is a memorable milestone. The path we take, what we look back on, and what we
look forward to is up to us. We determine our destination.
It has indeed been a long and enriching journey of 25 years. 4. The Golf Day at Chapman Golf course The Dinner Dance
and the Golf Day have come and gone. The Dinner Dance at The Rainbow Towers on March 25th. was well-attended and attracted people from all walks of life.
The guest speaker, Professor Hope Sadza, was inspiring in her speech. She spoke well of Private School education in Zimbabwe and globally. She also applauded Watershed for its involvement in Agriculture, which is the backbone of the economy in Zimbabwe. As the vice chancellor of the Women’s University she invited the Agriculture Diploma graduates from Watershed to continue with their studies at the University.
Former students, Munyaradzi Maraire and Karen Nyenga, conducted an auction. The celebrations committee, led by Mrs. Tendai Banda, sold memorabilia. Current parents, Mrs. Chilowa, Mrs. Muchenje and Mrs. Muromba assisted with decor. It was a night to remember for the rest of one’s time. The Golf Day at Chapman Golf course on the 17th. of June saw the course registering its full capacity. Again there was support from many different sectors of the population. The weather was at its best. The chairman of the Board, Mr. Joseph Goromonzi and his partner, won the top prize. The prize-giving ceremony in the evening, was a very lively and exciting event, with Mr. Never Mhlanga, parent and Board member, as Master of Ceremonies. These two events, apart from raising a bit of money for the multipurpose green hall, have been our biggest advertisers. Many eyes were opened out there and the confidence has been cemented at Watershed. 5. Watershed college Spring Fair We wrapped up our Jubilee celebrations over the weekend with a Basketball tournament running from Friday to Sunday morning. Eight schools participated and Watershed came third after Gateway and Prince Edward. On Sunday we had a very successful fair which was well attended. Thank you to
all the parents who made it to the College on Sunday. You will never know what you did to your children and the staff. We all enjoyed the day. Thank you also to the parents who sold the raffle tickets for the dairy project. The draw was conducted on Sunday afternoon. For those who did not sell, may I remind you that the tickets will be
considered to have been bought by you. Raffle Ticket Winners The head would like to thank all the parents who participated in the Agriculture Diploma Centre Raffle. The following are the prize winners:
